Spectrum Billing Redesign

Helping over 25 million customers quickly pay, enroll in auto pay, and understand what they owe

Project summary

  • Three billing systems were consolidated into one for spectrum.net, spectrumbusiness.net and the My Spectrum app.

  • Our design team created a bill pay flow supporting all three customer footprints.

  • UX writing was critical for customers since a mainframe backend system didn’t reflect real-time balances for the first iteration.

  • Charter’s bill pay consolidation and redesign project spanned over two years.

My role as a Content Designer

  • Content owner

    I attended all design reviews with Product and Leadership, gathered feedback, explained my decisions, and promoted our Voice & Tone guidelines.

  • Billing subject-matter expert (SME)

    I was the only SME for the billing feature on Charter’s Content Design team and trained other team members on the overall feature.

  • Cross-functional collaborator

    To gain alignment and improve communication and collaboration with internal teams, I participated in most Engineering ceremonies (backlog grooming, stand-ups, sprint planning). I also worked side-by-side with engineers on implementing content.

  • UX writer

    I worked with other designers to ensure content fit into the overall product solution. I created labels, button CTAs, tooltips, microcopy, headers, navigation labels, error messages and more.

  • Usability tester

    I helped write test plans, observed usability testing, and prepared prototypes. I carefully considered analysis results to help inform my content decisions.

  • Listener and learner

    Product informed design of customer challenges, and Design, Product, and Engineering came together to make iterative improvements. Several challenges were solved by making minor adjustments to product content after the first release.

Initial results

Three months post-implementation:

  • 11% increase in payment flow completion

  • 4% increase in online billing usage

  • 400% increase in auto pay enrollments after three months of usage data
